Exeter College

Exeter College is the tertiary college for the City of Exeter and surrounding parts of Mid, East and South Devon. The College also attracts a number of students from other parts of the UK and from overseas, partly as a result of our highly successful International Baccalaureate programme. As a tertiary college, Exeter offers a very wide range of post-16 education and training opportunities through three main sectors:

The Sixth
Skills
Access and Support

Each of these sectors is led by one of the College’s Assistant Principals and offers an unusually wide range of courses, programmes, qualifications and other learning opportunities which are of high quality and have proved to be of interest to the whole community. The college works closely with local schools, community networks and employers to ensure it meets their various needs. We are working closely through the Exeter4Learning partnership and wider 14 – 19 curriculum groups to ensure a collaborative approach to the new Diplomas due to start in September 2009.

Through the Sixth sector, we offer 45 different AS/A2 subjects, the prestigious International Baccalaureate, and various BTEC National Diplomas, Certificates and Awards. .

Through the Skills sector we offer a wide range of vocational National Diplomas, NVQs and HNC/HND courses in Construction, Engineering, Motor Vehicle, Health, Care and Public Services, Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Business Administration and IT, Sport, Leisure and Tourism. Many of these courses are based in specialist industry-led skills centres. We also have a growing involvement with our 14 – 16 vocational programme linked with local schools

Our Access and Support sector offers a range of pre-entry and foundation courses and excellent support for all our students. We offer full-time and part-time courses to over 10,000 adult learners each year, from leisure classes to degree programmes.
Our Music, Sports and, soon to be announced, Gifted Academies provide the elite students with additional tutoring and coaching that their particular ‘interest’ demands.

If you decide to come to the college you will be supported by a tutorial system, which ensures that your individual needs are met from the very start and you will be supported throughout your course. Enrolment to programmes is based on your ambitions, interests, aptitudes and abilities as well as previous examination achievements. As you progress through your course you will receive guidance on opportunities open to you via further study within the college, including our higher education programmes, or further afield in Higher Education, or employment. In the recent national inspection, support for students at Exeter College was described as “outstanding”.

The college has always been proud that its entry requirements do not place artificial barriers in the way of recruitment to its courses. We wish to give all students the opportunity to achieve their academic potential. However, experience has shown us that there are minimum requirements necessary if good results are to be achieved, hence clear entry requirements are linked to each course. Staff at enrolment follow these requirements as they guide students on to a programme where they will be likely to succeed.

The excellent examination results and other achievements of our students are evidence that we are successful in supporting students through this process. I hope very much that you will choose Exeter College for your further education and look forward to welcoming you to the college.
