Workshop on Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

10th November 2008

SOUTH WEST COLLEGES CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT – ADVANCED NOTIFICATION

Workshop on Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)

Venue: Oake Manor Golf Club

Context
Linked to the work of Regional Economy Thematic Group a workshop on knowledge transfer and knowledge transfer partnerships has been arranged. The workshop will allow both an update on the emerging national and regional agenda for knowledge transfer, and offer the opportunity to look specifically at the mechanism of KTPs.

KTPs are a longstanding mechanism for working with businesses. The current ‘classic’ scheme allows a graduate (‘the associate’) to work in a private, public or third sector organisation for between one and three years supported by an academic member of staff. The programme is part-funded by a range of public bodies, which significantly reduces the cost to employers, especially SMEs, in engaging with the programme. To date the majority of KTP programmes have been run by Higher Education Institutions.

A shorter version of the KTP of between 10 and 50 weeks is being developed and is expected to go live in the first half of 2009. The government’s intention is to increase the number of KTP programmes and in particular encourage Further Education Colleges (FECs) to become involved with the programme. The workshop will enable FECs to gain a better understanding of the programme and how they might become engaged in KTPs.

Who should attend
The workshop is aimed at Vice Principles/Directors/Heads of Business Development who have responsibility for the strategic development of this area of their institution’s work. Numbers for the day will be limited and a maximum of two participants from any one FEC will accepted.
